Cairns and the the Car...
Well, we finally got a roof rack today. a 4 bar system for the bargain price of 63 dollars. considering the cheapest we had seen was 250 dollars for a 2 bar system, we did rather well. we can now throw all the shit onto the top of the roof and have space for a few passengers...preferably swedish.
we planning to go up to the very tip of Oz, Cape York, in the next week. It'll be 2000 K round trip of gruelling proportions apparantly, but it should be quite a caper...
We gonna go with Scotty and Reggie, a couple of aussies who we met who have a land cruiser. Its gonna be great. Its just what we need. East cost is great for beaches and bitches, but its time to get Out Back again to see what we really came here for.
Smoke me a kipper , skipper, we'll be back for breakfast.....
Whitsundays....
well, we went for a day cruise to the whitsundays, keith has joined us from the gold coast and we went out and got accidently smashed and so as the day came we felt a bit shitty but this was soon overcome by the 5 pints of free tea on the boat, and the 3 hour ride out to the outer reef. beutifull. hot day, not a cloud etc, top deck of 30 knot catamaran, wind in your hair and just fantastic.
arrived at a pontoon in the middle of nowhere on the great barrier reef. spent the day there, reef good but not the best ive seen but still amazing as always.
saw some huge fish....one must have been 1.5 meter long and 70 cm high, a dory wrass or something they called it, they feed it so it comes back every day. saw barracuda, sea turtles, lots of fish basically! amazingly fantastic!
then we met Reggie and Scotty again by accident and we travelled up to Bowen for the day, beutiful beach, noone there and a stinger net (big net in the sea to keep box jellyfish out of swimming area.) in this net there were more fish than i saw in the reef, notably a massive Sting Ray, a huge , very scary , Barracuda, that we tried to first catch with a rod and then get with hand spears but utterly failed cos it was too fast and finally a huge sea turltle that you could touch. utterly amazing.
We then headed off for Townsville, and ended up catching up with keith as he had broken down in his luxurious 400 dollar car. the mechanic he went to removed the automatic clutch (a one screw fix) and everything was sorted. Townsville seemed nice but we were there on the weekend and all was great, but during the week was dead (everyone has jobs there...not really backpacker territory) so late last night we decided to drive to cairns. got here at 2.30 am last night , set up camp and have been doing car stuff all day.
